The London-based market travels around the UK throughout the year bringing a taste of Italy to local people. Food on sale is produced in Italy and represents many different regions. There are about 15 varieties of olive oil from different areas, including Tuscany and Sicily, and about 10 types of vinegar from around the country, including the original balsamic from Modena.
Cheeses on sale include the northern Italian Gorgonzola, Parmesan from the Parma area (which also produced the famous ham) and sheep’s milk cheese Pecorino – most commonly from Sardinia and Sicily. Other regional treats include Sicilian arancini (stuffed rice balls) and spicy salami from the south of the country. And in the unlikely event that the visitor gets tired of food, there is a stall of Murano glass, from the famous island town in Venice’s lagoon.
Mamma Mia Italian Food Market was set up and is run by Andrea Capelli, who grew up in Bergamo, North Italy and began making pizzas at the age of 10.
Andrea says the only produce that doesn't come directly from Italy is the bread, which is nevertheless freshly made by an Italian bakery in London. Options include focaccia and ciabatta, baked with ingredients like sun-dried tomatoes and onions. There’s plenty of choice for the fan of Italian food and those who want to try out more options. Andrea says the key to making the right choices is to give the food a try first.
